- What are Queen Magpie pieces made from and how do I care for my pieces:
Costume Jewellery
Since our pieces are made from a mix of items sourced from all around the globe your Queen Magpie piece/s will consist of an array of materials making it difficult to supply a blanket answer.
Metal
Gold plated brass
Generally metals consist of a brass base with a 14kt or 16kt gold plating unless stated otherwise (Gold Filled, Zamak or 9kt)
Care:
- Avoid perfume, soap, chemicals, cosmetics and contact with water
- Skin acidity can affect tarnishing (which varies from person to person)
Zamak:
Is an alloy composed of zinc, aluminium, magnesium and copper. It is more durable and resistant to tarnishing than plated brass.
Gold Filled
Refers to a cost effective alternative to solid gold that can last 10 to 30 years with proper care. It's made by bonding a layer of gold to a base metal using heat and pressure. The gold layer is usually thicker than gold plating, making it less likely to chip, tarnish, or discolour.
Care:
- Store in a dry place in a pouch or separate from other pieces to avoid scratching
- Clean with mild soapy water
- Avoid saltwater as can corrode and weaken gold-filled jewellery. If it comes in contact with salt water, rinse with clean water
9kt solid gold
Care:
- Using a soft toothbrush gently scrub and rinse with clean water
Stones
We avoid using plastic and glass beads (unless Japanese glass seed beads) and aim to use semi-precious stones where possible. Not only are the stones magical gifts from Earth, but we believe that semi-precious stones hold properties that can aid and support us in our daily lives.
Care:
- Semi-precious stones can be cleaned with mild soapy water and then rinsed or wiped with a soft cloth
Porcelain
We use porcelain for all our ceramic pieces as it is harder, denser, and more durable than other china. Please note however that if dropped it will break.
The gold on the pendants is called gold lustre and it may come as a surprise that it is actually real gold! It’s initial colour before firing is red.
Care:
- Handle with care
- Illustrations on the pendants are done by Miree and made into transfers which are fired onto the pendants/artworks. These can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
